Mechanical and electrical brake callipers

The brake calliper is a system that allows for blocking the rotation of a vehicle's wheels, therefore braking, using the frictional action exerted by the brake pads on the brake disc to which the wheels are integrally attached.
There are two types of brake calliper:
  • Floating: a floating brake calliper, thanks to a lateral slip system, has freedom of movement compared to the brake disc, which is fixed. When braking is carried out, the calliper piston pushes the pad from the internal side into contact with the disc and subsequently the calliper, moving, allows the pad to contact from the external side.
  • Fixed: a fixed brake calliper has no movement relative to the disc. This type of calliper uses one or more pistons for each side of the disc, which squeeze the brake pads towards the disc on both faces of the same. It is more complex and more expensive than the floating type.

    A further distinction must be made regarding the operation of the handbrake mechanism. In mechanical brake callipers the piston will block the wheels, acting on the pads, through a mechanical advancement of the piston. In electric callipers, however, the piston is electrically operated by an electric motor which will determine its exact positioning with respect to the pads.


    Electric brake callipers have numerous advantages, from compactness (the dimensions free up space in the passenger compartment) to practicality of use, given that operation requires minimal effort. Furthermore, the manufacturer can set the electronics to allow it to automatically engage or disengage, improving safety and simplifying the driver's life. An obvious application, in this sense, is hill start assist, which prevents the car from rolling backwards for a few seconds when the normal brake pedal is released. In case of emergency, the electric device ensures powerful and immediate deceleration, under the control of ABS and ESP.
